It has been impossible to include more than a few of the many brave deeds which have been performed all over the world by individual Black Watch Soldiers on many fields of war; but here at least will be found some account of most of the Regiment’s battles and Campaigns, and it is for the honour of the Regiment that the individual fights. Yet each man has its honour in his hand; and as our earliest historian put it: “In a Highland Regiment, every individual feels that his conduct is the subject of observations, and that, independently of his duty, as one member of a systematic whole he has a separate and individual reputation to sustain, which will be reflected on his family and district or glen.” Earlier histories are nowadays unfortunately hard to come.

This one owes a great deal to two others. The first, just quoted, which appeared in 1822, has a cumbersome title, but is generally referred to as “Sketches of the Highlands of Scotland,” and was written by General David Stewart of Garth; he was born within a mile or two of the Tay-side meadow where The Black Watch held its first muster in 1740, and joined the Regiment in 1787, after four years in the Athole Highlanders. The second is the Story of The Black Watch, by Captain (afterwards Lieut.-Colonel) John Stewart, who joined in 1906 and died in 1931; this was the first short history designed for use within the Regiment, and the present book is based through-out on Colonel Stewart’s. It is by the courtesy of his son, Lieut.-Colonel Keith Stewart, who joined the Regiment in 1924 and served in it for thirteen years, that the present book is possible. It is appropriate that both these books were written by Stewarts: for there have been more officers of that name in the Regiment than any other except Campbell; while Campbell, Stewart, Macdonald, Robertson, Thomson, Frazer and Grant have been the names most usually found in the Regiment’s ranks. It is not suggested that readers of this book should cumber their memories with details of dates or of casualties. It is suggested rather that they should read it and learn how much has been achieved by our forebears, and how the battles which have contributed most to our history have been those in which the odds have been most against us.

When next it falls to us to go into battle, whatever the circumstances, we must remember that battles never turn out just as expected, and not always when expected; and that when we are present at the making of history, we never know what shape it will take. (Incidentally, the chief and most unexpected feature of every battle is how noisy it is.) Nobody knew on the eve of Ticonderoga in 1758, or of Crete in 1941, that the fighting on the morrow, with all casualties which it brought, was to shine among the annals of British arms; nor did anybody realize as they fought at Waterloo or Alamein that they were having a direct influence, every man-jack of them, on the history of the world. One never knows. But one can always be sure that one is making history, whether on a big scale or a small, and whether good or bad. The compiler offers this book to the Regiment in pride and gratitude for twenty-four years’ happy service under the Red Hackle.

It was a war fought mostly alone without open and declared friends, and with most of the world dedicated to its downfall.

But he was part of a small but elite people. This book has no pretensions of being the full pictorial story of the war, but it does capture the mood of the times which books packed full of historical facts rarely achieve. Many books have been written, will be written and others will die stillborn, justifying the war or flatly condemning it; books full of pride for Rhodesia and the Rhodesians, books full of sneer for them, books pro UDIing and books anti UDIing, books talking of politicians worldwide having their comfortable say while gradually, a country which had been so young and vibrant, bled and died.

They fought, too, because it was their duty as soldiers to fight, and have soldiers since time immemorial. There has rarely been a finer or braver fighting man than the Rhodesian and his name and names of his regiments are carved with pride in the halls of glory. He owes no one an apology. He never lost a battle, but because the odds were enormous and so unjustly stacked against him, he lost a war and then, afterwards, he lost his country that was Rhodesia.

Foreword: This is the story of the Selous Scouts Regiment of Rhodesia which was formed in 1973, and abolished without formal benefit of disbandment, when Robert Mugabe's ZANU party took power after the British supervised elections in 1980. Its purpose on formation was the clandestine elimination of ZANLA and ZIPRA terrorists, both within and outside Rhodesia. Their success in this field can be gauged by the fact that Combined Operations, Rhodesia, officially credited them with either directly or indirectly being responsible for the deaths of 68% of all terrorists killed within Rhodesia during the war, losing less than forty Selous Scouts in the process. While the Regiment was in being, they earned an incredible number of honours and awards gaining the first of only two Grand Crosses of Valour ever awarded, one Commander of the legion of Merit, seven Officers of the Legion of merit, nine Silver Crosses of Rhodesia, twenty nine Bronze Crosses of Rhodesia, ten Members of the Legion of Merit, five Defence Meritorious Medals, eight Military Force Commendations, four Meritorious Conduct Medals and one Medal for Meritorious Service. A total of eighty five awards.

It is normal in Regimental histories for a roll of honour of dead sustained by a Regiment to be included, as well as a list of persons whom medals were awarded, but this has not been done in this book. Not due to lack of respect for the honoured dead, or because former Selous Scouts do not wish to salute their heroes, but for the more simple and germane reason of fear of reprisals by former terrorists against men who served in the Selous Scouts or their loved ones, particularly former African Selous Scouts.

It is for this reason too why some former officers and men appear in these pages under a mom de guerre and why the faces on many illustrating photographs have been blanked out. It is stressed that this does not necessarily mean the new spirit of reconciliation between the old order and the new in the state of Zimbabwe is locked at askance or with cynicism, quite to the contrary, it merely means that a certain status quo has been accepted that this is a story of Africa and things in Africa have never been the same as anywhere else. Generally too, throughout this book the fighters of ZIPRA and ZANLA are called terrorists when being referred to from the Rhodesian Security Force context not to create controversy but because terrorist or terr is what they were called by the Rhodesians during the war, and to call them anything else would create a false historical perspective. Nevertheless, it is accepted that all terms from terrorist, terrs, guerrillas, boys-in-the-bush, freedom fighters, sons-of-the-soil or cadres means one and the same thing and are interchangeable, according to taste or viewpoint held. To avoid confusion, splinter groups and the occasional name change of African terrorist organisations have been ignored, the terms ZANU/ZANLA and ZAPU/ZIPRA being used throughout. What it contains is a list of soldiers, sailors and airmen who died between 1914 and 2005 and who came from South Warwickshire. They are listed in alphabetical order by year of death within sections devoted to each town or village. In some cases there are sections for individual war memorials.

What is so amazing is that for most of the entries there is a brief biographical note giving the battalion, division and brigade served in the date of death the family details and addresses, where they worked before the war and what medals they were awarded.
